Information for Visiting Coaches

Thank you for agreeing to evaluate images for the North Shore Photographic Society. We're looking forward to having you join us. You'll find judging for us to be an interesting and rewarding experience.

For meetings held on Zoom, we will email you login details, in advance.

For in-person Print Night meetings, we meet at Silver Harbour Centre, 144 East 22nd Street, North Vancouver B.C. The doors open shortly after 7:00 p.m., but if you arrive by 7:15 p.m. there will be adequate time for an orientation.

Our coaching and critiquing nights are not meant to be a competition between members, rather an opportunity for members to learn and improve their photography. Recent surveys have emphasized the importance of receiving helpful, constructive feedback for all members... both those keen on advancing through the Star Level rating system, and those interested in advancing their photography skills without being rated and scored.

Feedback Only

Members can choose to submit their work for feedback only instead of for rating and scoring. For Feedback Only images, the image title will be announced, but not the Star Level or image-maker's name. In providing constructive and helpful feedback for each image, you are asked to comment on both, a) the strengths of the image (i.e. what has been done well),  and b) how the image could be improved and strengthened.

As a Digital Projection Coach...

You will be scoring images that are screen-shared on Zoom, and giving comments on each image. You will use the Chat tool to send your scores privately to a designated club member. We have no projection themes or categories.

The projections will be presented with the newer members (Star Level 1) first, proceeding through all levels of experience to finish with the most experienced (Star Level 5) images.

It will be helpful if you familiarize yourself with our "Star" system of evaluation, (Image Evaluation System).

As a Print Coach...

You will be scoring prints and giving comments on each image. We have two print categories: (1) Monochrome and (2) Colour.

Images can be printed by the photographer or they may be commercially printed, either digitally or by using traditional methods.

For both categories, the prints will be arranged to start with newer members (Star Level 1) first, proceeding through all levels of experience to finish with the most experienced (Star Level 5) members' entries.

It will be helpful if you familiarize yourself with our "Star" system of evaluation, (Image Evaluation System). There will be a coffee break where you can mingle with the members.
The break is followed by an informal discussion of the evening's entries and optionally, viewing a portfolio of your work. We end the meeting by 10:00 p.m.
