Program Title: What Makes a Great Print
Description:
Prints are the time-honoured and dominant presentation form of the world’s most-loved photographs, and printmaking is an essential activity of photography. For those new to printing and those who have experienced dissatisfaction with printing, this session will address some of printmaking’s most important decisions and will help you confidently make prints – maybe lots of them!
Wendy and Russ Kwan are film and darkroom-based artists and educators. Their exhibition work spans many forms of photography from traditional silver-gelatin to experimental homebrew prints. They have been exhibited in commercial and museum venues across North America and published in art and philosophy magazines and journals. They are the black and white darkroom faculty at Langara College, and continue to see film and digital students one-on-one in their home and studio and via Zoom.
Russ is interested in making unusual photographs and producing entirely new species of prints. His current projects include landscapes of the sun crossing the sky, and photograms processed in his "opaline" special sauce, which plates a layer of iridescent silver metal on the print surface.
Wendy continues to develop her work with lumen printing, adding multiple layers and "wet lumen" techniques to her process. Additionally, a project featuring "shadow characters" projected into interior settings via double negative darkroom printing is in the evolutionary stage.
