Replay: Harold Davis - Creating Compelling Compositions

Friday, April 26, 2024 (This is a replay of the April 12th event)
6:30 PM Pacific Time: Zoom ‘doors’ open
6:33 – 7:00: Delta Photo Club image showcase
7:00: Welcome & Presentation

Of all the magical elixirs that make up a successful photograph, composition is perhaps the most fundamental, and at the same time the most elusive. What makes a composition “good”?

Traditional attempts to define “good composition” and to pass on rules for good compositional construction are often doomed to failure. The truth is, there are no hard and fast rules. Rules eliminate experimentation and spontaneity, which are crucial for creating compelling, dynamic, and exciting compositions. The best compositions contain an element of the unexpected.

In this presentation, Harold helps guide photographers at any level to improve their work by creating compelling compositions.

The 2023-24 Series So Far...

John Barclay - Through the Lens of Love

Held on Friday, November 17, 2023 (This event moderated by North Shore Photographic Society)

John Barclay: Realizing that photography is a creative art form, I am constantly exploring new
ways to connect with my subject. Over the last few years, I have been learning to fall
in love with rather than just photograph what I am drawn to. Love? Really? What
does love have to do with it? That is what this presentation disclosed. How does
the love of my subjects influence my photography? It boils down to this — I
photograph what makes my heart sing!

In this presentation, I shared stories and my thoughts from a 20 year journey to
where I now look through the lens of love.

Elizabeth Gray - Black and White Photography - Shooting with Intent

Held on Friday, January 12, 2024 (This event moderated by Victoria Camera Club)

Elizabeth Gray: American nature photographer Rob Sheppard said, “Good black and white photography is not about the removal of colour!” I could not agree more. Unfortunately, many photographers try unsuccessfully to rescue mediocre images by converting them to black and white.

In this presentation, Elizabeth discussed ways to recognize what subjects and scenes work well when shot in black and white and why you would deliberately choose to shoot in black and white over colour. She talked about what makes strong monochrome photos and how to train your brain to see in black and white. With these skills, you will be able to create much stronger and more compelling monochrome photographs.

Lee Nordbye - An Artist’s Mountain Adventures and MisAdventures

Held on Friday, February 23, 2024 (This event moderated by Cowichan Valley Camera Club)
Lee Nordbye: Listening to the ice crunch as I dig my crampons into the ice, my mind wanders momentarily. When my attention returns to the moment, I quickly slide down the steep ice face of Little Athabasca Glacier. A jerk of the rope and I come to an abrupt stop. Without hesitation, I get up and start to climb up the face. I reach my guide, and he asks if I am ok, I say yes, we have a bit of a laugh, and we go to our target Boundary Peak.

In this presentation, Lee gave us a sense of being with him on his adventures and misadventures in the Canadian Rockies like this one and his recent trekking experience in Bhutan. He paired the stories with his bold visual stories. Lee detailed what energizes him to take up adventures like the one above and the inspiration for each of his images. Lee also shared a few tips and tricks he uses to capture his images.
